Gall-Bomford

Bomford modified Gall

Description

A modification of the Gall stereographic, turning it from a cylindric to a pseudocylindric projection to reduce stretching in the mid latitudes.

Classifications

pseudocylindric
compromise

Graticule

Meridians: Complex curves.
Parallels: Straight, with variable spacing generally increasing away from the equator.
Pole: A line about 76% the width of the equator.

Distortion

Undistorted on the central meridian at about 45°59′ (probably intended to be 46°). Distortion is fairly evenly balanced between areal and angular everywhere except in the vicinity of the 46°th parallels north and south, where angular distortion dominates.

Similar projections

Like The Times projection, this is a modification of the Gall stereographic. Latitudinal spacing is the same as the Gall stereographic.

Origin

Guy Bomford, developed for the American Oxford Atlas of 1951. The formulation used by Geocart is due to John Savard.
