Classifications

pseudocylindric
equal-area

Graticule

Meridians: Sinusoids.
Parallels: Straight parallel lines.
Poles: Lines 72.4% the length of the equator.
Symmetry: About the central meridian and the equator.

Scale

Correct along the equator.

Distortion

Free of distortion along the equator. Angular deformation increases away from the equator.

Similar projections

A limiting case of the sinucyli projection. The simple equal-area homotopy can approximate the Nell nearly exactly.

Origin

Presented by Adam Maximilian Nell, 1890. This is the limiting case of a conic projection he devised and is, in this limiting case, a sort of average of sinusoidal and Lambert cylindric equal-area projections, with parallels adjusted to retain equivalence.
