Description

Cylindric projection with Mercator-like appearance but reduced high-latitude excesses.

Classifications

cylindric

Graticule

Meridians: Straight, evenly spaced, 83.8% the length of the parallels.
Parallels: Straight, with spacing increasing from the equator.

Scale

Scale is correct along the 10°N/S parallels and constant along all parallels.

Distortion

Free of distortion nowhere. The map’s distortion is predominately in the form of areal inflation except in the low distortion band in the tropics, where angular deformation is greater.

Origin

By A.S. Karchenko, revised by A.I. Shabanova, 1951–1952, based on the work by Urmayev that forces a chosen scale factor along three different parallels.
