Meridians: Complex curves. By design, the 20°E/W meridians cross the equator at 0.85 the distance of the 20° parallel from the equator.
Parallels: Straight parallel lines. By design, the 80° parallels are ½ the width of the equator.
Poles: Lines ¼ the length of the equator.
Symmetry: About the central meridian and the equator.

Scale

Correct along the 34°44′N/S parallels. Constant along all parallels.

Distortion

Free of distortion at 34°44′N/S on central meridian.

Similar projections

This projection is a flat-pole modification of McBryde-Thomas I.
Hufnagel II stretched 1.02× horizontally and compressed proportionally vertically has similar characteristics, but the poles are points.

Origin

Concept by Webster McBryde and mathematical development by Paul D. Thomas, 1949.
