Ptolemy I

Description

One of three conic-like projections proposed by Claudius Ptolemy.

Classifications

archaic

Graticule

Meridians: Straight lines, kinked at the equator.
Parallels: Arcs of circles, equally spaced, bounded at the north by the latitude of Thule (63°) and south by the latitude of Meroe (16°).
Poles: Arcs of circles.

Similar projections

This projection is a specialization of the equidistant conic projection from the northern extent to the equator, plus a southern hemisphere extension of inverted construction.
