Cylindric equal-area projection optimized for mid latitudes.

Meridians: Straight, evenly spaced, 63.7% the length of the parallels.
Parallels: Straight, with variable spacing.

Scale

Scale is correct along 45°N/S parallels and constant along all parallels.

Distortion

Free of distortion along the 45°N/S parallels and constant along all parallels.

Usage

The Peters World Map has become something of a brand for social justice.

Similar projections

This is a specialization of the cylindric equal-area projection, arranged to present Europe with least distortion.

Origin

Proposed by James Gall in 1855. Arno Peters claimed authorship in 1973, apparently having independently developed it in 1967, and promoted the projection and cartography built on it thereafter.
