About that Google’s Mercator doodle’s blurb…

Bizarre how people just make things up. For public consumption. Quite casually. I can’t decide if the recognition is better than the miseducation or not.

Did they change the text?
It says:

In 1569, cartographer Gerardus Mercator created the first map that portrayed sailing rhumbs as straight lines

… but I seem to remember that it said something different a few days ago – or am I mistaken?

Yes! I complained to a friend at Google. He forwarded my comments, and within hours, they had fixed it. For those wondering what’s going on, the blurb originally stated that Mercator was the first to create a map taking into account the spherical shape of the earth.
