Raisz Topo World - Denoyer Semi-Eliptical

Post by Maezar »

Greetings,

I am trying to recreate a graticule as shown on this map by Erwin Raisz:

http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet ... mi=0&trs=1

When I examine the Denoyer Semi Eliptical projection in Geocart, it appears very different. I can't get it to line up. Admittedly, I a very new to Geocart. Can anyone help?

Hello, Maezar. Interesting find!

While the map states “Denoyer Semi-elliptical projection”, and that is the same name used for the Denoyer projection that Snyder analyzed (and that is in Geocart), it is clearly a different projection. I do not see any reference to the Rumsey collection variant in the literature. Perhaps the Rumsey variant is based on similar construction principles as the better known version (that is, merely parameterized differently?), but the pole-line has been stretched to roughly twice the length, and the parallels increase in latitude.

Unfortunately this is not a projection you’ll find in Geocart. One of the closer fits aside from the outside fringes is Winkel II.

Best,

Winkel II worked pretty well. Thanks daan!
