Re: Chalker Continental Composites

I also don't understand the eagles. I see from Wikipedia that in the Iliad, Zeus sent an eagle as a good omen and Diomedes was the first to see it, but this seems like a pretty minor event. More significant seems to be the story that when Diomedes died, Venus turned his followers into birds, but th...

Re: Chalker Continental Composites

Nice catch, Pete! Corrected the image on the previous page, if anybody wants the corrected topo image. Not sure the exact "correct" way to fix the problem, but for the moment I've used a stretch/squish. Equirect is probably the wrong choice. I'm exploring other combinations next, trying to...

Re: Chalker Continental Composites

No, that image was composed in Geocart out two instances of the “generalized Wagner” and one of the azimuthal equal-area projection. But it should be able to do that in d3, as well. Ah, got it! Finally figured out I can turn the borders off for compositing in Geocart, which is nice. Apian-Chalker C...

Re: Chalker Continental Composites

To me, this simply doesn’t work, not even in a artistic application. Because it feels like two unrelated maps – there is “no flow” (don’t know if it’s clear what I’m meaning here). I understand what you mean. You need to be able to visualize the wrap, which is harder when the meridians don't match ...

Re: Chalker Continental Composites

I was looking through my web page, when I noticed one projection I came up with there - with some inspiration from the Strebe projection, but based on Wagner VII - would be a perfect candidate for improvement with your technique. Cool, nice! If we can get an optimized illustration spun up, I'd be h...

Re: The Chalker Continental series

Alright! Thanks to Tobias and some extra help from Peter, I've got d3 functioning locally now. Much gratitude, gentlemen! Working on some sort of semielliptical + cylindrical combo for the base. Here, I try Apian II with equirect chalkerapiang.png Think I've found my favorite general setup, aestheti...

Re: The Chalker Continental series

I got around the problem by using a very old version of Firefox that didn't have the security feature. That sounds good, I'll just install the old Firefox to keep things simple. Would you mind taking a peek at which version is working for you, and sharing your page with the interruption implemented?

Re: The Chalker Continental series

Sweet, thank you Tobias. Straight out of the box, everything is working locally except rendering the continents. Looks like it may require a local JSON server? I don't presently have one set up, but I can fix that (if that's the problem), or stick them online somewhere if all my local troubleshootin...

Re: The Chalker Continental series

All these projections already have names. If you want to name the application of this interruption scheme to a given projection, then I'd suggest something like "Denoyer's interruption scheme applied to the loximuthal projection". I'm not sure whether or not "scheme" is the best...

Re: The Chalker Continental series

Sorry, I misread what you'd written. These images barely constitute maps, though. When I hear the term "world map", especially if the map, rather than the projection, is significant enough to be named, I expect more detail than just the outline of the continents, something more like this:...
