Larger political databases

Post by Piotr »

The political databases are only available up to 1440×720, which makes it low-detailed. Also, it appears pixelated when zoomed, unless you use Final quality, which is slow.

Idea 1: Use a special algorithm to double the image size

Standard resizing algorithms don't add more detail. There are some algorithms designed for that (Scale2x, 2xBR, etc.) but they don't work well on anti-aliased images, due to the pixels with intermediate colors.
However, there is also Waifu2x, which is a machine learning algorithm that works well on anti-aliased images. Here is the 2880x1440 result of this (make sure to convert to .tif if you want to use it in Geocart):

It's pretty nice. Here's a comparison of 1440x720 version, scaled 2880x1440 version and Google Maps on Poland:

Unfortunately, it cannot be scaled 2x again, because of the 1500x1500 limit.

I heard it through the grapevine that larger political databases are in the pipeline.

I don't understand this. Please write it in plain English.

I’ve heard the rumour that larger political databases are in preparation.

Let’s just say you’re not the first Geocart user who realized that the political raster databases are quite small.

Stop being "too lazy to use plain English", this is like being too lazy to die!

The political databases are probably intended as an option in map boundary settings. Just be glad that I used Waifu2x to enlarge the political database. You can use the enlarged version in Geocart if you want.

Well, in my opinion, idioms are a part of "plain english"…

Thank you, but I’ve already got my own political map to use in Geocart and the other map projection applications that I work with.
Actually, I’ve used three different version in the course of time…
