Re: The first true equal-area projection

This could easily be an XKCD comic. I love how eastern Europe looks kind of like an egg sac, and how China gets stretched out into a spindly tree shape.

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

Yeah, most of the time was me waiting 9 months for the first round of reviewer comments. After that the process went pretty quick. I'm not sure why the initial comments it took as long as they did; maybe COVID delayed it somehow.

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

In case anyone here is interested, the paper got published (the peer review process takes way longer than I expected)!

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

That's beautiful! I've never seen an interrupted map that goes so out of its way to avoid splitting up archipelagos, and the interruption is really imperceptible to me. I would go for the 5° grid myself. I know Jacob Rus made a conformal map based on an octohedron by specifying a Cahill-Keyes-like b...

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

I don't know if I personally like the way eastern South America and western North America look in that particular one, but I certainly see the potential. Maybe I'll try something like what you suggested. Or at the very least, I'll mention conformality in the future work part of my conclusion and hop...

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

Hi, Luca, I think that can be done. Probably the way I would go about it would be to replace the elastic energy function with something like lambda*log(a*b)^2 + mu*log(a/b)^2. Then, if I crank mu way up or lambda way down, like I did with Danseiji II, the result would be basically conformal. The mai...

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll definitely rework the sentence Quadibloc pointed out. I'm glad ye like Danseiji III and IV; those are certainly my favorites of the group. I like V as well despite it's strangeness---I guess I just have a taste for unorthodox maps. I agree with Tobias that Danseiji ...

Re: Request for feedback on my map projection paper

Thank you! I suppose in private would avoid spamming others who follow these forums with comments that are too specific to interest them. I'm currently aiming for the International Journal of Cartography and GIS. It's actually from 弾性 for "elasticity" and 地 for "earth", though I ...

Request for feedback on my map projection paper

So this might be a weird request, but here goes: The last year or so, as a hobby, I've been developing some map projections by modelling the Earth as an elastic mesh. Here's one of the more visually distinctive ones: danseijiIV.png I've gotten them to where I think they're worthy of publishing in a ...

Copyright on "Stylized World Topo" RAW file

I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this, but may I use the input raw file for my own purposes? I understand that it comes from NASA's imagery, which is public commons, but you've made some nice modifications by improving the contrast and lightening the oceans, so should have some creative...
